My Eco-Friendly Decking Plans

My current decking, soon to be replaced!

It’s finally happening… I’ve actually decided on a new decking material. My tired old wooden deck hasn’t lasted as well as my husband and I had hoped, in fact it’s a health and safety nightmare! So, after much thought and research, I’ve decided to go with a very eco friendly composite material. I’m thrilled to announce that I’m going to be working with Trex on this project.

The samples from their UK supplier Arbordeck (the exclusive UK distributor of Trex Transcend) were by far the nicest out of all the samples I ordered. But, more importantly, not only are they ascetically pleasing, Trex decking products are made from 95% recycled material, and come with a 25 year warranty. I’m making so many changes in the home to be more sustainable, so this product ticked all the boxes.

The recycled materials the boards are made up from are reclaimed wood, sawdust and plastic from many common household items such as retail bags and newspaper sleeves. In fact, the company keepsmore than 362 million kilograms (more than 400,000 tons) of plastic and wood waste out of landfills each year, and no trees have ever been cut down to manufacture Trex products.

Unlike wood, Trex decking, resists fading, staining, scratching and mold – and won’t rot, warp, crack or splinter. Upkeep is hassle-free and requires no sanding, staining or painting. Just a simple soap and water cleaning twice a year is all that is needed to keep the deck looking “like new” for years to come.

Within the Trex manufacturing plant, some hydraulic systems are powered by vegetable-based oil and, through a proprietary method, the need for smokestacks is eliminated.

Additionally, nearly 100% of factory refuse is recycled back into the manufacturing line.

Trex Company is the world’s largest manufacturer of high performance wood-alternative decking and railing, with more than 25 years of product experience.  It’s stocked in more than 6,700 retail locations worldwide. There are two different decking ranges: Transcend® and Enhance® . I’ve chosen Island Mist from the Transcend range. There were six shades available, three in the Premium Tropical range: Island Mist, Lava Rock, Tiki Torch and Spiced Rum. And two in the Classic Earth tone range: Vintage Lantern and Gravel Path (this last one was a close second choice.)

Trex has a handy calculator you can use for an instant estimated materials cost. For a composite deck these run from £82 – £113 per square meter, that’s including substructure, decking and fasteners. So, it’s a great price for something thats guaranteed for 25 years, you can also search for approved fitters in your area. One of the Trex Pro Platinum approved installers Browns Lanscape have been round to measure up, and are booked in to fit my new deck.

When deciding how to update your garden, it is important to investigate the products that will best suit your needs, whilst also embracing some of the latest trends to really turn your garden into an area you are proud to use and showcase. But, just as important, we need to be making decisions that are eco-conscious, taking the impact on the environment and sustainability into account.

I’m so excited about this project, I’ll be posting another blog with sneak peeks once the project is started. Meanwhile, I’m on the hunt for a new outdoor dining set and my husband Alex is getting ready for planting up.

Until next time,

Amy x

We are thinking about this sort of decking! Our old wooden deck is a crumbling slippery nightmare. Looking forward to seeing how yours looks and hearing about the installation. Love your garden Amy xxxx

We had composite decking put down 2 years ago with Ecoscape. It has transformed our garden and seating area and it looks as good as it did when it was first put down! Enjoy! X
