Get Your Hygge On This Autumn

Getting all hygge at @littlehouseinlondon

This Autumn, you will mostly find me padding around in fluffy slippers, lighting evocative scented candles, switching on ALL the twinkly fairy lights and generally revelling in the most cosiest of seasons.

The hashtag #hygge has nearly four millions hits on Instagram

Last year, I discovered (along with the rest of Instagram) the phenomenon that is Hygge. Pronounced ‘hoo-ga’, it’s a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of cosiness that evokes wellness and contentment. The Danes consistently top the polls as the happiest people on the planet, along with many other Scandinavian countries. It is often argued that this is all down to hygge.

@daniellellp‘s aspirational Instagram feed always oozes cosy hygge vibes.

The concept of hygge is one which touches a huge part of Scandinavian people’s lives, news of this happy lifestyle has been spreading quickly for the last few years, crossing international borders to spread warmth and comfort wherever the idea touches.

One of the first accounts I discovered when I first started my interiors Instagram journey, was Hygge for Home, by Reena Simon. To say Reena has embraced all things hygge is an understatement. Her beautiful pictures make you want to crawl through the screen and start whipping up a hot chocolate in her dreamy rustic kitchen. I feel sure I would leave her stunning home with a feeling of true calmness.

Reena can often be found running Hygge For All Seasons workshops with Rebecca Lawson of Malmo & Moss. Rebecca’s styling and photography are true scroll-stoppers. Her effortless style again encapsulates that feeling of warmth and happiness. Who knew 10 years ago that un-ironed bed linen was would be a thing today!? Oh how I’ve rejoiced in this crumpled bed linen craze.

This hygge-esque master bedroom of @malmo_and_moss would surely mean you’d never get up?

For me, hygge is about capturing a moment, that precious time when I’ve finally sat down, with a coffee or book, snuggled my feet into a fluffy sheepskin. It could also be dreamy bubble bath or that perfect moment with a friend or child. This rustic Scandinavian trend has been encapsulated in the interiors world with monochrome tones and dreamy sepia photography, that just make us want to transport ourselves into these perfect moments.

Sheepskins, faux or real, feature a lot in this tactile trend. I’m lucky enough to own a few (possibly bordering on obsession) They are hands down one of my favourite props when taking a pic, they add such texture and softness to a room.

A cosy corner has been styled to perfection at @buttonandbark by layering textures in this egg chair of dreams.

Bring out your blankets, or treat yourself to a new cable knit throw. Layer them, snuggle under them, blankets are HUGE this season. Some of the patterns and textures available on the high street right now are phenomenal.

The @thewhitethistle has captured the essence and higgle and autumn with this stunning set up.

Candles, fairy lights, festoons… get your twinkle on! I’ve been hosting a fairly silent campaign for .fairy lights all year round, for most of my adult life. Fairy lights are NOT just for Christmas, neither is hygge. Let’s embrace these crazes all year round.

Lastly, if you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace then get cosy by it, it doesn’t need a be  working to create an ambience, fill it with fairy lights or candles. An alternative to this could be draping a mirror or shelf with fairy lights to create a focal point to create a cosy vibe. Enjoy your home and rejoice in it’s cosiness.
